The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is one of the most profound moments in human history, marked not only by His immense suffering but also by the reactions of those who witnessed it. One of the most unforgettable characters in this narrative is the Roman soldier who pierced Jesus' side with a spear. His final words, “Truly, this was the Son of God” (Matthew 27:54), have echoed through generations, leaving us to wonder what made this hardened soldier come to such a profound realization at the foot of the cross.
Who Was This Soldier?
The Bible does not mention the soldier’s name directly, though Christian tradition has often referred to him as Longinus. Some accounts suggest he was a centurion—a leader of Roman soldiers, tasked with overseeing executions, including the crucifixion of Jesus. His actions were not unusual by Roman standards. It was common practice to break the legs of crucified victims to hasten their deaths, but when the soldiers came to Jesus, they found He was already dead. To ensure His death, this soldier thrust his spear into Jesus' side, and blood and water flowed out (John 19:34). This event not only confirmed that Jesus was truly dead but also fulfilled prophecies that His bones would not be broken (Psalm 34:20).
The Soldier’s Transformation: What Did He See?
At the moment Jesus breathed His last, the Gospel of Matthew tells us that the earth trembled, rocks split apart, and the temple curtain tore from top to bottom. These supernatural events struck fear into the hearts of those standing at the cross. The Roman soldier, perhaps accustomed to seeing men die, must have realized that Jesus’ death was unlike any other.
The cry, “Truly, this was the Son of God,” did not come from someone familiar with the Jewish faith or its prophecies. This was a Roman soldier—likely a pagan—proclaiming the truth. His words stand as one of the most unexpected testimonies in the New Testament. This sudden insight shows us that even those far removed from faith or knowledge of God can be deeply moved by an encounter with Christ.
What Happened to the Soldier Afterward?
While the Bible does not provide further information about the soldier’s life after the crucifixion, early Christian tradition holds that he experienced a spiritual awakening. Some stories suggest that Longinus became a follower of Christ, even abandoning his military post to spread the message of Jesus. According to these traditions, he was later martyred for his faith.
Whether or not these traditions are historically accurate, what remains clear is the significance of the soldier’s words. In a moment filled with violence and death, his proclamation pointed to the truth that Jesus was not just a man but the Son of God—the promised Messiah.
A Reminder for Us All
The story of this Roman soldier reminds us that God’s truth can reach anyone, anywhere—even those who seem farthest from faith. His transformation shows us that it’s never too late for someone to encounter Jesus and recognize His divinity. Like the soldier, we too are invited to stand at the cross, reflect on the reality of Christ’s sacrifice, and declare: “Truly, this was the Son of God.”
As we reflect on this powerful moment, let it inspire us to see beyond the surface. The very spear that caused harm became a tool for realization. God can use even the most unexpected moments—and people—to reveal His truth.
